Of all the rotary tiller gearbox selection parameters, gear ratio has the greatest direct impact on field performance — yet it is the parameter most often specified by default ("give me the standard ratio") rather than by engineering analysis. Choosing the wrong gear ratio for your soil type results in either over-worked tines that create excessive soil clods, or under-powered tines that struggle to penetrate compacted soil and overload the gearbox.

The Gear Ratio–Soil Relationship: The Basics

The gear ratio determines tine shaft rotational speed at a given PTO input speed. For a 540 RPM PTO input:

  • 1:3 ratio → tine shaft at 180 RPM (maximum torque, lowest speed)
  • 1:2.83 ratio → tine shaft at ~191 RPM
  • 1:1.65 ratio → tine shaft at ~327 RPM (lower torque, higher speed)
  • 1:1.6 ratio → tine shaft at ~337 RPM (highest speed)

Slower tine shaft speed (lower ratio number at output) means higher torque multiplication — the tines hit the soil harder per revolution but make fewer passes per meter of forward travel. Faster tine speed means more passes per meter but lower torque per pass. The correct choice depends on soil resistance and desired seedbed finish quality.

In this scenario, the 1:2.83 ratio is generally the best compromise — it provides adequate torque for moderately compacted medium soils while producing a usable tine speed for seedbed preparation work. For operations with consistently heavy clay or consistently light sandy soil, selecting the ratio optimized for your predominant soil type will deliver better performance and lower fuel consumption per hectare.
