The Critical Interface Between Shaft and Sprocket

A bushing (or bushing bore insert) is a precision-machined component that locks a sprocket, sheave, coupling, or gear firmly onto a shaft — transmitting torque through compressive clamping or keyway engagement. A hub extends this connection, providing the rigid mounting platform between the bushing and the driven component.

Selecting the correct bushing type — QD, Taper Lock, Split Taper, XT, or Splined — determines installation ease, torque capacity, shaft run-out, and how quickly your maintenance team can service equipment in the field. A wrong selection means slippage, fatigue failure, and production loss.

From Frequent Failures to Stable Operation:

How Ever Power Thoroughly Solved the Challenges of Bushing and Hub Applications

Bore Tolerances Out of Spec — Resulting in Shaft Slippage

Bushings machined to loose tolerances allow fretting wear between the bushing bore and shaft. The result: progressive backlash, vibration, fatigue cracks in the shaft, and eventual catastrophic sprocket disengagement — often at full load.

Non-Interchangeable Dimensions Forcing Costly Redesign

Sourcing from suppliers who don't adhere to AGMA or ISO standards means bushing bores, keyway widths, and flange diameters that don't match your existing equipment — triggering re-boring, custom adapters, and weeks of engineering rework.

Premature Corrosion in Wash-Down or Outdoor Environments

Standard cast iron bushings in food processing, marine, or outdoor agricultural environments corrode rapidly — seizing on the shaft, contaminating the product line, and requiring emergency replacement within months of installation.

Difficult Removal Causing Hours of Unplanned Downtime

Incorrectly specified bushing types — particularly using standard taper bushings in high-vibration applications — result in bushings that seize and cannot be removed without damaging the shaft or hub, turning a 30-minute maintenance task into a multi-day shutdown.

Bushes & Hubs Buyer FAQs

Technical and commercial questions answered by our engineering team.

Are your bushings interchangeable with Dodge, Martin, and TB Wood's brand products?

Yes. Our QD, Taper Lock, Split Taper, and XT bushings are manufactured to be dimensionally interchangeable with equivalent products from Dodge (Regal), Martin Sprocket, Rexnord, and TB Wood’s. Bore diameters, keyway dimensions, flange diameters, and set screw patterns match industry-standard AGMA and ISO specifications. We recommend customers confirm interchangeability against their specific part number at quotation stage — our engineers will verify before supply.

What is the difference between a QD bushing and a Taper Lock bushing?

QD (Quick Detachable) bushings use a split two-piece flange that clamps around the shaft via cap screws through the bushing — allowing installation and removal without disturbing other shaft-mounted components. They are ideal for high-maintenance environments. Taper Lock bushings use a precision-matched taper between the bushing OD and the hub bore — set screws pull the bushing into the hub, creating an interference grip on the shaft. Taper Lock is more compact but requires more care during removal. For highest torque with rapid service access, QD is generally preferred; for compactness and lighter torque, Taper Lock is the standard choice.

How do I determine the correct bushing size for my shaft?

The key parameters are: (1) shaft diameter — the bushing bore must match your shaft OD precisely; (2) torque requirement — calculated from your motor power (kW or HP) and shaft speed (RPM); (3) keyway requirement — whether a key is needed and to what standard (AGMA or DIN); (4) the hub and sprocket/sheave you’re mounting — this determines the bushing series (e.g. QD JA, SK, SH, SD, SF, E, F, J, M, N, P; or Taper Lock 1008–5050). Send us your shaft diameter, required torque, and the component being mounted — we’ll specify the correct bushing within 24 hours.

What is the maximum bore size available for QD bushings?

Standard catalog QD bushings cover bore sizes from 1/2″ (12.7 mm) up to 7-7/16″ (188.9 mm) across the full QD series range (JA through P). For shafts larger than this, we manufacture custom split taper bushings and hubs to your exact bore dimension — contact [email protected] with your shaft diameter and torque requirement.

When should I use a Split Taper bushing instead of a QD or Taper Lock?

Split Taper bushings are the preferred choice when: (1) the shaft cannot be disassembled for installation — the two-piece split design allows the bushing to be fitted to the shaft at any point; (2) extremely high torque must be transmitted — split taper designs provide more clamping force per unit length than QD or standard taper lock; (3) the application involves severe vibration or shock loading (crushers, hammer mills) where the split taper’s full-length engagement provides superior resistance to fretting. For routine maintenance environments, QD remains preferred due to simpler service access.

Can you supply stainless steel QD bushings for food processing applications?

We currently supply Stainless Steel Taper Lock Bushings (316L) as our standard hygienic product range — these cover the majority of food, pharmaceutical, and marine applications. Custom stainless steel QD-style bushings can be manufactured to order. For food and pharmaceutical applications we recommend specifying electropolished 316L surfaces and confirming FDA-compliance of any lubricants used during assembly. Contact us to discuss your specific hygienic design requirements.
