What Are Timing Pulleys

Synchronous Drive Components for Zero-Slip Power Transmission

Timing pulleys — also called synchronous pulleys or toothed pulleys — are precision-machined wheels with evenly spaced teeth that engage a matching timing belt. Unlike V-belt drives, the positive tooth engagement eliminates slip, providing an exact speed ratio between driver and driven shafts.

The tooth profile (trapezoidal, curvilinear/HTD, or modified curvilinear/AT) determines load capacity, noise level, and positional accuracy. Selecting the correct tooth profile, pitch, and flange configuration is critical to drive performance and belt life.

Pitch

Distance between adjacent tooth centers, measured in mm (metric) or inches (imperial). Determines timing belt compatibility.

Pitch Diameter (PD)

The theoretical diameter at which belt pitch line runs. PD = (Number of Teeth × Pitch) ÷ π. Used for speed ratio calculation.

Tooth Profile

Trapezoidal (XL/L/H) for positioning; curvilinear HTD for high torque; AT-modified for high precision servo drives.

Flanged vs Unflanged

Flanges keep the belt tracking on the pulley. At least one pulley in each drive system should be flanged to prevent belt walk-off.

Common Questions

Timing Pulley FAQs

What is the difference between HTD and classical trapezoidal timing pulleys?

HTD (High Torque Drive) pulleys feature a curvilinear tooth profile that distributes belt load more evenly, allowing significantly higher torque capacity than classical trapezoidal tooth profiles (XL, L, H, XH). HTD is preferred for high-torque servo, robotics, and industrial drives. Trapezoidal profiles offer better positional accuracy at light loads due to lower backlash.

What is a pilot bore timing pulley and when should I use it?

A pilot bore timing pulley is supplied with a small standard bore (typically 6mm or ¼”) for the customer to machine to their exact shaft diameter, keyway, and tolerance. Use pilot bore when you need flexibility across multiple shaft sizes from a single stock item, or when you require a specific bore tolerance (e.g. H7/h6 fit) that you will machine in-house.

What materials are available for timing pulleys?

Standard materials: Aluminium alloy 6061-T6 (lightweight, anodised for corrosion resistance — preferred for servo and robotics), Carbon steel 1045 (high strength, for heavy-duty industrial), Stainless steel 303/316 (food processing, medical, corrosive environments), POM (Delrin) and Nylon (light-duty, low noise). Material certificates supplied with all orders.

How do I specify a timing pulley? What information do you need?

For a complete quote, provide: (1) Series/pitch standard (e.g. HTD 5M, L, T10); (2) Number of teeth; (3) Belt width; (4) Bore type (pilot, finished, taper bore, QD); (5) Bore diameter and keyway if finished; (6) Material; (7) Flange requirement; (8) Quantity. A drawing or existing part number also helps us confirm quickly.

What timing pulley pitch standards do you manufacture?

We manufacture all major standards: Imperial classical (MXL, XL, L, H, XH, XXH), Metric T-series (T2.5, T5, T10, T20), HTD (3M, 5M, 8M, 14M, 20M), AT-series (AT3, AT5, AT10), and S-series (S2M, S3M, S5M, S8M). European standard in both metric and inch sizes. Custom profiles available on request.

Are HTD 5M and AT5 timing pulleys interchangeable?

No — despite having the same 5mm pitch, HTD 5M (curvilinear) and AT5 (modified trapezoidal) have different tooth profiles and are not interchangeable. Running an HTD belt on an AT5 pulley (or vice versa) causes premature tooth wear and belt failure. Always match belt and pulley tooth profiles from the same standard family.

Do you offer taper bore timing pulleys and which bushing sizes?

Yes. Taper bore timing pulleys are available in L to XH inch pitch and in HTD 8M and 14M metric series. Compatible bushing sizes range from 1008 to 3535 and are interchangeable with Dodge, Fenner, SKF, and other major taper lock brands. The self-centering taper ensures excellent concentricity without precision boring equipment on-site.

What surface treatments are available and for which applications?

Aluminium pulleys: clear or black anodising (8–15µm) for corrosion and wear resistance. Steel pulleys: black oxide, zinc electroplating, nickel plating, or phosphating depending on corrosion requirement. Stainless: typically supplied natural finish. For food-grade applications, anodised aluminium or 316 stainless with electropolish are recommended.
