An agricultural gearbox is a sealed mechanical transmission unit purpose-built for the harsh operating environment of farm implements. Unlike industrial gearboxes used in factory settings, agricultural gearboxes must withstand significant shock loading from blade strikes, rock impacts, and sudden speed changes; continuous exposure to dust, soil, crop debris, fertilizer chemicals, and moisture; seasonal storage periods with risk of internal corrosion; and wide ambient temperature swings across operating seasons.
The most common driver for agricultural gearboxes is the tractor’s Power Take-Off (PTO) shaft — a standardized rotating shaft that projects from the rear of the tractor and spins at either 540 RPM or 1000 RPM depending on the tractor’s selected mode.
