Sign 1: Visible Cracks in the Cast Iron Housing

Hairline cracks in the housing around the bearing bosses or mounting flange ears are not repairable in the field and are rarely cost-effective to weld and machine. Cast iron housing cracks propagate rapidly under operating shock loads — a hairline crack visible during seasonal inspection becomes a catastrophic split within 50 operating hours. Any visible housing crack is a replacement trigger, not a repair candidate.

Sign 2: Metallic Grinding Noise That Does Not Improve After an Oil Change

A grinding noise that develops gradually and intensifies under load, and persists after a fresh oil fill with the correct grade, indicates that gear tooth surfaces or bearing races have already sustained fatigue spalling damage. Spalled surfaces cannot be repaired by lubrication — the broken metal fragments circulate in the oil, accelerating damage to all remaining undamaged surfaces. Continue operation in this state and you risk converting a single gear replacement into a complete housing write-off.

Place your hand on the exposed input shaft and attempt to move it radially. More than 2 mm of movement indicates the input shaft tapered roller bearing has collapsed or is severely worn. This level of play allows the bevel gear teeth to misalign under torque, causing edge loading and rapid tooth fracture. Bearing replacement is technically feasible but requires shaft disassembly and precision pre-load adjustment — often more cost-effective to replace the complete unit.

Sign 4: Complete Seizure or Sudden Loss of Blade Rotation

If the PTO is engaged and the blades do not rotate with no evidence of a shear bolt failure or slip clutch engagement, the gearbox has seized internally. This is almost always caused by a bearing cage collapse that locks the shaft, or a gear tooth fracture causing a debris jam. A seized gearbox requires complete disassembly to diagnose — and the internal damage from even a brief seizure event typically renders the gear set and bearings unrepairable.

Sign 5: Repeated Oil Seal Failures in Quick Succession

An oil seal that requires replacement twice within a single season is telling you that the shaft surface it runs on is scored or worn out of round — conditions that consume new seals rapidly. Continuing to replace seals without addressing the shaft condition leads to repeated oil loss events and the consequent damage from operating low on oil. If shaft surface inspection confirms scoring or ovality, replacement of the complete gearbox unit is typically more cost-effective than precision shaft repair and re-sealing.
