GL-4 vs GL-5: Which is Correct for Rotary Tiller Gearboxes?

This is one of the most frequently debated lubrication questions in agricultural gearbox maintenance. The answer requires understanding what the GL rating actually specifies:

GL-4 is formulated for hypoid gears operating under moderate speed and load conditions. It contains a lower concentration of sulfur-phosphorus EP additives than GL-5. This makes it compatible with yellow-metal components (bronze bushings, brass synchronizers) that can be corroded by the higher additive concentration in GL-5.

GL-5 contains higher concentrations of extreme-pressure additives, providing better protection for spiral bevel gears under severe shock and high-load conditions.

For rotary tiller main gearboxes with all-steel internal components, GL-4 or GL-5 gear oil at SAE 80W-90 viscosity is acceptable. If your tiller gearbox incorporates any bronze or brass bushings in the side-drive chain case assembly (common in some designs), use GL-4 exclusively to avoid chemical corrosion of those components. Fill Volume by Gearbox Size

Fill volume varies significantly by gearbox model and must be confirmed from the product specification sheet — not estimated. General ranges by HP class:

  • Compact 20–40 HP class (EP-9.310, EP-9.311): Typically 0.4–0.6 liters for the main gearbox.
  • Mid-range 75–100 HP class (EP-75, TLZ292A): Typically 0.8–1.2 liters for the main gearbox.
  • Heavy-duty 125+ HP class: 1.2–2.0 liters depending on housing size.

Always fill to the level plug — do not rely on volume measurement alone, as the gearbox mounting angle on different tractor three-point hitch configurations affects the actual oil level relative to internal components.

Recommended Change Intervals

  • Initial Change — 50 Hours: New gearboxes generate fine metal particles during gear and bearing run-in. Change after 50 hours without exception — this is the most important single maintenance event in a new gearbox’s service life.
  • Regular Interval — 200–250 Hours or Annually: For standard commercial operations, an annual end-of-season oil change keeps lubricant quality within acceptable limits. High-hour operations (300+ hours/season) should target 200-hour intervals.
  • Contamination Event: Any time the gearbox has been submerged, operated with a failed seal, or shows milky oil on inspection, perform an immediate full drain-and-refill.
