How to Select the Right Gearbox

Follow these five steps to narrow down your gearbox specification before contacting our engineering team.

01

Define Load & Torque

Determine rated output torque (N·m), peak torque, and duty cycle (continuous, intermittent, or shock-prone).

02

Set Speed Ratio

Calculate required reduction ratio: input RPM ÷ output RPM. Account for motor speed and process speed tolerance.

03

Choose Configuration

Select inline (coaxial), parallel shaft, or right-angle output based on your machine layout and available installation space.

04

Specify Environment

Note ambient temperature, IP rating needed, food-grade lubrication requirements, and corrosive/dusty conditions.

05

Request a Quote

Send your parameters to [email protected] — our engineers respond within 24 hours with model recommendation and pricing.

About Industrial Gearboxes & Gear Reducers

A gearbox (also called a gear reducer or speed reducer) is a mechanical device that transfers power from a motor to a driven machine, simultaneously adjusting output speed and torque through a set of meshing gears. By selecting the appropriate gear ratio and configuration, engineers can precisely match a motor's operating characteristics to the torque and speed demands of any industrial process — from high-speed precision robotics to slow, high-torque bulk material handling.

Gearboxes are categorized by their internal gear arrangement: worm gear reducers use a helical screw meshing with a worm wheel for high ratios in compact right-angle packages; planetary gear units distribute load across multiple planet gears surrounding a central sun gear for outstanding torque density; helical gear reducers use angled teeth for smooth, efficient power transfer; bevel gear drives change the axis of rotation through conical gears; and cycloidal reducers use eccentric cam geometry for extremely high single-stage reduction ratios with near-zero backlash.

Key Gearbox Selection Criteria

  • Output torque rating (N·m or lb·ft)
  • Reduction ratio and output speed (RPM)
  • Mounting configuration (flange, foot, shaft)
  • Shaft orientation (inline, right-angle, parallel)
  • Operating temperature range
  • IP / NEMA ingress protection rating
  • Lubrication type (oil bath, grease, food grade)
  • Service factor and shock-load tolerance
  • Input interface (IEC motor flange, solid shaft)

Common Gearbox Standards & Certifications

  • ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management System
  • AGMA (American Gear Manufacturers Association)
  • DIN / ISO gear tooth accuracy standards
  • CE marking (EU Machinery Directive)
  • IEC motor flange compatibility (B3, B5, B14)
  • IP54 / IP65 / IP66 enclosure ratings
  • ATEX (explosion-proof variants available)
  • FDA-compliant lubricants for food processing
  • RoHS compliance for exported products

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a gearbox and a gear reducer?

The terms are used interchangeably in industry. Both refer to a mechanical assembly that changes the speed and torque from a power source (typically a motor) to a driven machine. “Gear reducer” emphasizes the speed-reduction function, while “gearbox” is the broader term used for any enclosed gear assembly including those that may increase speed (such as in some wind turbine nacelles).

Can Ever Power supply custom non-standard gearboxes for OEM projects?

Yes. We maintain a dedicated OEM engineering team that handles custom shaft sizes and keyways, modified mounting patterns, special output flanges, non-standard gear ratios, custom housing materials (stainless steel, special coatings), and integrated motor packages. Share your drawings or specifications with [email protected] and we will provide a technical proposal and timeline.

What is the typical lead time for gearbox orders?

Standard in-stock models ship within 3–7 business days. Configure-to-order models (non-standard ratios or mounting) typically require 10–20 days. Custom OEM gearboxes require 25–45 days depending on complexity. We maintain buffer stock of our most popular NMRV worm reducer and planetary gearbox models for urgent orders. Expedite options are available — contact us for details.

Which gearbox type is most efficient — planetary or helical?

Single-stage helical gearboxes achieve slightly higher efficiency (up to 98%) than planetary units (up to 97%) because planet carrier friction losses are absent. However, for multi-stage high-ratio drives, planetary gearboxes are more efficient because they achieve high ratios in fewer stages. Worm gearboxes have the lowest efficiency (50–90%) due to sliding contact, but provide self-locking and very compact right-angle drives at a low cost.

Do you offer gearboxes with integrated servo motor interfaces?

Yes. Our high-precision planetary reducer range is specifically designed for servo motor integration, featuring zero-backlash clamping input hubs and standard servo flange adapters compatible with major servo motor brands including Siemens, Fanuc, Yaskawa, Mitsubishi, and others. We can also machine custom motor adapters for non-standard servo flanges.

What warranty do you provide on industrial gearboxes?

We provide an 18-month warranty from the date of delivery against manufacturing defects in materials and workmanship, covering bearing failure, housing cracking, and gear tooth breakage under rated operating conditions. The warranty excludes damage from overloading beyond rated torque, incorrect installation, improper lubrication, or operation outside specified environmental conditions. Extended warranty packages are available for large volume orders.
